The husband surprised me a week ago by saying he wanted to install a backsplash in our kitchen. Wait, you want to add something to your long to-do list? Well, OK! It’s been something we’ve kicked around the idea for here and there, since our current backsplash is nothing more than a piece of our laminate countertop placed along the back wall. It’s not even attached. It was one of the first things we noticed that wasn’t quite right about our house, but here we are nearly four years later and we haven’t done anything about it. Oh well. Not high on the list of priorities. Plus, thinking of replacing it someday meant that attaching it meant headaches in the future. Woohoo procrastination!

So, Saturday we went to a local tile shop, where they were very friendly and helpful, and we looked through loads of samples and brought a bunch home.

While holding the samples up against the wall and countertop, panic began to set it. Complete and total indecision. None of them look right, and on top of that, I began thinking about all the other problems in the kitchen. It was like an avalanche of thoughts and decisions weighing on me, and I didn’t even know where to start. Someday we want to replace the countertops, and the sink, and the appliances. But look, there are other problems with the cabinets. Do we replace some of them? All of them or none of them? What about the flooring? Are there things I can do to make the space look nicer without replacing everything? What if I just want it to look finished and cohesive? If we get one backsplash now, will it go with a future countertop? And it goes on and on…
Kitchen nightmare
So today, we stopped in at Home Depot to take a look at countertop samples. If we can at least make a decision about that, maybe we can move forward. Lots of beautiful choices, but again, nothing quite right. On top of all this, is the reality that we can’t afford to renovate our entire kitchen. We can’t even afford to replace the countertop right now. The only thing we really can afford is the backsplash. So we came up with an idea. What if, we get a backsplash now that we like, that goes well with everything else we have right now, and is cheap enough so that in two to three years when we do have the money, we can renovate the kitchen and if we want to redo the backsplash we can and not feel (too) bad about it. Does anyone else have these dilemmas?

For now, the current choice is to go with a standard, white subway tile. It’s inexpensive, and we can add an accent band of tile for interest. So I’ve started searching for kitchen pictures to see what other people have done. (See Dream Kitchen above).
