I think the garden has looked a little rough the last two weeks, but there are a couple of highlights.
Ironweed
In the last post of the garden I showed pictures of this plant, that I thought was another Joe Pye Weed. Actually it is a relative of Joe Pye Weed called Ironweed, or Vernonia.

It’s starting to wind down now, but I just love that color.

This plant is still flowering– I first noticed it in late June! I wish I knew what it was…
Red Shiso about to flower
The red shiso is about to start flowering around the garden- I will need to keep an eye on it and pull some before they go to seed. I don’t want to have to pull a million seedlings next year.

I really dig those colors- sensing a theme? Right now I am enamored with dark purples and lime greens (in the garden).
Hosta Begonia and Fern
Here’s a shot of that lime green color. This pretty flowering hosta really stands out from the japanese holly fern, and the hardy begonias. If you look carefully, you can see another variety of fern in the lower right corner. There’s also two different varieties of ivy in this picture, some dwarf mondo grass, and Japanese Acuba.

Some more blooming hostas, these are at the end of the driveway. There’s a single purple oxalis leaf in front of one of the hostas, and some variegated sedum in the back.

There are Hostas blooming everywhere! This one is in the lower garden by the bench. I’m hoping to work on painting the bench soon- it really needs some TLC.

These lovelies were going strong last week– even though the leaves are rather plain, the flowers were huge on these.

And one more on the stairs- here you can really see the begonia starting to set its seeds.
Sedum Here
So two weeks ago I shared a pic of the sedum by the bench blooming, and since then there are lots more coming out! This one is up in the side yard.

This sedum is on the other side of the house, under the 300+ year old Beech tree.

I feel like I didn’t even know that sedum existed before this last year, and now I see it around here everywhere! I have found several more plants that are still growing. I found this one by accident today, down close to the bank of the stream.
Japanese Black Pine maybe
So I have this pine tree in the side yard at the top of the slope, and I’ve been trying to figure out what it is. It’s not the typical scrub pine you see everywhere around here. It had a very light green growth on it in the spring, and now it has these white tips. I think it might be a Japanese Black Pine (but I am by no means certain!)

Butterfly Weed
Not everything is all green though- the butterfly weed is still going crazy, much to the enjoyment of all the pollinators.

And lastly, certainly among the most stunning flowers blooming right now, is this Japanese Anemone. I think I will be seeing blooms on this at least through the end of the month.
I was able to spend about two hours in the garden this week, after it finally cooled off some. I pruned back a lot of the dead (and nearly dead) phlox. So now there are some bare looking spots- maybe I can find ways to dress those up this fall with planters!
