Just as I thought things may slow up a bit the first week in June, the garden wowed me again with new blooms- some things I could see were coming, but others just seems to pop out of nowhere!
First thing I noticed were that some of the hostas are starting to bloom! This big beautiful blue hosta is out front.
And here’s a detail of the white flowers:
I found a couple more in the back yard too. This little one is in the center of the lower garden. I think those are cardinal flowers starting to come up below it.
And behind the bench, a Hosta in a pot is blooming behind two pretty pink azaleas that pretty much hit their peak this week.
I will say these later blooming azaleas weren’t quite as spectacular as the early ones. But I still love having them and I love that the blooming periods are staggered so I have more color for longer.
This white azalea is on the other end of the lower garden, and it curiously has just a few little pink blossoms on it mixed in.
I wonder if maybe it’s some kind of hybrid and it is either losing the pink color, or has been affected by the weather. Just behind it, and almost under it, I found another tiny azalea blooming an almost coral color. Unfortunately I did not get a good shot of it because of how well hidden it is.
Another white blooming plant started showing some color this week- the two large yucca’s growing at the end of the driveway.
It’s hard to believe they get enough sunlight where they are situated, but they managed to survive!
Growing in the shade, and loving it, are Astilibes. I’ve got three different colors coming out right now.
A small white astilibe:
(You can also see some of the “Chameleon” houttuynia cordata in this pic- I pulled a bunch out around the astilibe about a month or so ago).
A dark pink, almost purple, astilibe growing in the veggie garden:
And also in the vegetable garden, this larger light pink astilibe:
The next blooms aren’t really all that new, but they are either in full bloom or I just wanted to show it off.
I really love this plant- purple Oxalis or shamrocks. The color is so deep and pretty. I’ve got it growing in lots of areas around the yard, but it really stands out against the light green of the creeping jenny (or moneywort). And, like hostas, if the foliage wasn’t pretty enough, there are these pretty little lavender colored blooms. It has been blooming a little bit here and there for at least a month.
I wanted to post an update on the coreopsis “zagreb”- it’s starting to show quite nicely, and is also nicely paired with a barberry bush.
I also found more daylillies blooming- I think these are probably more of the Siloam Jandee. These are at the top of the rock garden.
And last, but not least, is the butterfly weed. It is going full blast now, and is practically glowing it is so bright.
Sadly, I have not seen any monarch butterflies on it. I haven’t seen any butterflies really. I have seen some other wasp-like creatures flying around it, but not even a bee. (But I have seen the bees in other flowers, so I know I do have some).
That’s what is going on the first week of June!
